Money Tips From My Parents

Things that I didn't understand until now from a Mexican American family perspective.
Growing up, I always heard the same money advice coming from my parents. Since I was younger, I never really paid much attention to it. However, now as a student in college trying to manage my money, pay bills, tuition, and trying to have a social life, I understand now.

1) "No compres si no lo puedes pagar en efectivo". (Don't buy it if you can't pay for it in cash.)
As a kid, this saying felt mean. Why wouldn't I pay for an item with a credit card? I know now that they were not being cheap, but they were avoiding debt.
2)"Lo barato sale caro".(cheap ends up being expensive.)
I used to think they were being picky with what they buy. Now I see that even cheap purchases can add up over time and become expensive.
3)"Guarda algo, aunque sea poquito" (Save something, even if it's just a little.)
My parents always found a way to save some money, even if it was a little. It was a good habit to have because saving a little adds up over time.
4)"Aprende a hacer las cosas tu mismo"(Learn to do things yourself.)
From fixing things around the house to cooking instead of eating out. I realize now how much you can save when you learn life skills.
