Money and Mental Health

Money and Mental Health (when budgeting feels overwhelming).

Sometimes budgeting doesn't feel great, it can be exhausting at times.

In society, we are told that tracking our spending can change our lives and how we live. In some cases it can however, it can get stressful and overwhelming. You are not alone. Managing money can get emotional, especially for college students.

  • The Hidden Burden of “Doing It Right”

Budgeting seems straightforward: spend less than you earn. But what if your earnings barely cover the basics? When rent, tuition, and groceries consume most of your income before you even consider saving?

It's not about laziness. It's about survival.

Factor in the pressure to have a side hustle, invest early, and maintain a social life, and it becomes overwhelming. The persistent voice telling you “You should be doing more” can lead to feelings of guilt, shame, or burnout.

  • You’re Allowed to Feel Frustrated

You don’t need to pretend budgeting always feels great. Some days it feels great, and some days it’s just one more thing to worry about.

Let yourself be human. Budgeting isn't supposed to feel like punishment, it’s a tool. You're not a failure if you're tired.

  • Small Steps Over Perfection

If you're struggling mentally, try to simplify. Consider:

The one-minute money check-in quickly look at your bank balance and write down one word that describes your feeling.

The “no-judgment” budget monitors your spending without attempting to change it. Just observe.

  • Last Reminder

You are not falling behind. You are not poor at handling money. You’re doing your best with the resources you have, and that’s more than sufficient.

Take a deep breath. Your future self doesn’t require perfection, just kindness and consistency.
